SMA.I.L:) – the solution for logistics and transport needs

In the world of logistics and transport, there is a growing need for an integrated platform capable of managing the increasing complexity of physical and information flows throughout the entire supply chain. Globalisation, pressure on margins, and increasingly high expectations in terms of service, sustainability, and traceability are forcing companies to change their paradigm: it is no longer enough to optimise individual processes, but it is becoming essential to synergistically orchestrate warehousing, transport, yards, production, and distribution, ensuring end-to-end visibility and real-time decision-making.

This is the scenario in which Zucchetti's Digital Supply Chain offering fits in, a vision developed in collaboration with several companies in the Zucchetti Group to provide a concrete and structured response to new market needs. It is an intelligent platform for efficiently integrating the supply chain, a unique and interconnected offering that covers all key processes – from manufacturing to logistics – combining advanced technologies and vertical expertise to harmonise, synchronise and optimise planning, workforce, production, logistics and transport, artificial intelligence and sustainability.

Within this broader strategy, Zucchetti Logistics' SMA.I.L:) platform is a fundamental component: not just a simple software suite, but a true strategic enabler for building integrated, resilient and future-oriented supply chains.

An integrated platform to manage the supply chain

SMA.I.L:) is able to optimise the entire supply chain, integrating warehouse logistics with WMS, transport and shipping with TMS, and yard management with YMS into a single digital ecosystem. A solution designed to harmonise information flows, ensure traceability and improve efficiency, productivity and operational control throughout the chain.

Warehouse Management System – WMS Replica

WMS Replica is the web-based Warehouse Management System solution for warehouse logistics on the SMA.I.L:). platform. It manages all warehouse logistics flows, supporting daily operations and real-time control through integration with numerous field technologies, including Voice, Light Wireless System, Wearable Scanner, AMR, RFID, Smart Labels and many others.

Developed on Zucchetti's Infinity platform, it communicates with the main ERP systems on the market via standard interfaces or specific integration modules.

In particular, the WMS covers:

  • Goods receipt and material identification
  • Warehouse storage and handling
  • Production support and accounting
  • Picking, packing, distribution and reverse logistics
  • Control tower and monitoring dashboards

In production contexts, the WMS communicates with APS and MES systems and enables Kanban management of production line supplies, enabling automatic requests to suppliers with a view to continuous replenishment. Track & trace and flow optimisation are always guaranteed, ensuring visibility and constant control over operations.

Transportation Management System – TMS SIMA

As regards TMS, the SMA.I.L:) platform offers a web-based solution designed for manufacturing and distribution companies also suited for transport and shipping companies.

For manufacturing and distribution companies, the TMS allows you to:

  • Plan journeys in supported mode
  • Calculate the optimal route
  • Calculate the carbon footprint
  • Choose the best carrier for each shipment
  • Manage the driver's delivery results
  • Have real-time visibility on delivery results
  • Calculate transport costs
  • Issue pre-invoices
  • Simulate new transport rates based on actual costs
  • Analyse KPIs to monitor transport and carrier performance

For transport and shipping companies, the TMS manages:

  • Land, sea and air transport
  • Intermodal shipments
  • Distribution
  • Integrated and international logistics
  • Integration with mapping
  • Travel documentation and e-CMR
  • Administrative control
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning functionalities
  • Container positioning
  • Customs documentation
  • Vehicle and workshop management with customised maintenance plans
  • Document archiving

Yard Management System – YMS Replica

YMS Replica completes the platform, ensuring structured and efficient yard management, thanks also to its integration with field technologies for access control and vehicle weighing. In particular, YMS manages:

  • Booking and time slot management for loading/unloading activities, avoiding waiting times and queues
  • Yard management of vehicles and goods with tracking and weighing
  • Gate flow and automated access control, with automatic number plate recognition systems for timely vehicle check-in and check-out
  • Dock management, with driver recall via SMS and monitoring of warehouse activities

SMA.I.L:) and Artificial Intelligence: from the integrated platform to the evolution of processes

Thanks to its integrated and modular architecture, the SMA.I.L:) platform is the ideal basis for introducing Artificial Intelligence into logistics processes. The availability of structured and homogeneous data from the warehouse, transport and yard allows operational information to be transformed into decision support tools.

This evolution is also confirmed by the results of the 2025 "Gino Marchet" Contract Logistics Observatory Conference held at the Politecnico di Milano: 30% of client companies already have AI projects in place, with growth forecast to reach 44% over the next three years. The adoption of AI, which is now more widespread in office activities, is gradually extending to warehouse and transport operational processes.

In this context, the SMA.I.L:) platform has developed solutions based on AI, digital twins and advanced analytics to improve the performance of WMS, TMS and YMS across the board. In WMS, AI optimises movements through RTLS, route calculation and integration with AMR. In TMS, it supports advanced transport planning, reducing costs and CO₂ emissions and strengthening sustainability tools such as the GreenWay calculation methodology certified by Bureau Veritas Italia. Finally, in YMS, it enables access automation and document control through chatbots and image and video recognition technologies.

From theory to practice: the Campari case

A concrete example of the application of these principles is the Campari Group case, presented during the 2025 'Gino Marchet' Contract Logistics Observatory conference. The company has adopted the Replica Yard Management System at its logistics hub in Novi Ligure, an area of 200,000 m² with around 100 vehicles managed every day. The solution, built progressively, integrates digital processes and automation for driver registration, guided access to the plant, vehicle weighing, automatic checks and digital management of loading and unloading operations.

The results achieved – reduced operating times, increased safety, complete traceability, increased productivity and full regulatory compliance – demonstrate how the integration of the YMS Replica of the SMA.I.L:) platform, Artificial Intelligence and human input can generate real and measurable value, confirming AI as a natural evolution of logistics, making the supply chain more efficient, sustainable and ready for tomorrow's challenges.
